Converge consumer interest with competition regime: Moily

The Hindu Business Line, October 21, 2010

Convergence of consumer interest with the competition regime should be a prerequisite in any discussion around the nascent competition law in India, said Mr M. Veerappa Moily, Minister of Law and Justice. “Competition should include principles of expansion and inclusion. Competition in a country or the globe does not come from peripheral participation, but from the entire mass of people and we must look into how the competition regime in India interacts with consumer welfare,” he said.

He was speaking at a conference organised by the Competition Commission of India (CCI), department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India and CUTS International, a consumer advocacy group. Citing some of the numerous instances of anti-competitive practices reflected in wild price fluctuations in certain sectors, he referred to commodity sectors such as onion and other agricultural goods where prices have varied abnormally. It was the task of CCI to address these anti-competitive conducts and ensure welfare gains, he added.
