India and rest of the world today face an employment conundrum. The global window for export and manufacturing led growth is closing while automation, digitalisation, reshoring and protectionism are causing rapid disruption in production of goods and services. The World Bank recently predicted that 69 percent of jobs could potentially be automated in the future. Therefore, creation of more and better livelihoods is today an imperative for policymakers everywhere.
Hence, to start a discourse on creation of an enabling environment to accommodate a large workforce in the country is the need of the hour. Thus, it is high time to start a discourse over a new development model. Where and how will the jobs and livelihoods of tomorrow be created?
Against this backdrop, CUTS International along with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), India have launched an initiative on Future of Jobs in India to better understand the discourses having a bearing on job creation in India and to get regional perspective on the same.
