Partner of Luthra & Luthra GR Bhatia has been nominated as member of the Expert Committee under the Chairmanship of Dhanendra Kumar to draft the ‘National Competition Policy’.
Dhanendra Kumar is the former Chairman of the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The other members nominated to the panel include Sudhir Mittal, additional secretary of Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Pallavi Shroff, Senior Partner, Amarchand & Mangaldas Suresh A. Shroff & Co. and Pradeep Mehta, General Secretary of CUTS International.
The recommendations of the Expert Committee are expected to change the landscape of the Indian Competition regime since the policy it would draft intends to provide a broad framework to various ministries and departments to enable framing of new plans for improving the competition in the market.
GR Bhatia is a Partner with the Luthra & Luthra’s Competition Law Practice Group. He was the former Additional Director General, CCI and the erstwhile Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission (MTRPC). He has also been associated with various amendments made in the Competition Act in 2007. Bhatia is also part of the faculty with the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs which imparts training on competition law to senior level officers of the CCI.
Bhatia has been instrumental in developing “Antitrust Training Guidelines” for multinational corporations including Intel, Guardian Industries and several trade associations besides “Competition Compliance Programmes” meeting specific requirements of specific corporate entities.
Luthra & Luthra has earlier been involved in drafting and finalization of “Internal Reference Material on Combinations” which is expected to be the Training Tool Kit for the functionaries of the CCI in analysing combinations in terms of the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002. The said project was assigned to the Firm by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
