National competition policy to help manufacturing growth

Press Trust of India, January 29, 2015

A national competition policy will help the manufacturing sector grow in a healthy environment, senior BJP leader and former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha said today.

“There is a need for the government to adopt a competition policy.

“We are convinced that a proper competition policy will ensure that manufacturing sector grows in a very healthy environment and most of all… So for the growth of the economy, competition policy appears to be a solution,” Sinha said.

After discussions for many years, a draft national competition policy was prepared by the government in 2011.

Sinha was participating in a round table discussion on ‘Adoption of National Competition Policy to Achieve Double Digit Growth in India’ organised by advocacy group CUTS International here.

According to him, competition policy is important to tackle entry barriers and has a much larger objective while competition laws are essential tools to act against unfair practices.

Member of Parliament K N Singh Deo, National Statistical Commission chairman Pronab Sen and CUTS International’s Secretary General Pradeep S Mehta, among others, spoke during the discussion.
