Quarterly Newsletter Issue #06
October-December, 2023
Dear Readers,

Greetings!

In this latest InnovTech@CUTS newsletter, Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS) showcases its strides in the digital economy and consumer empowerment through research, advocacy, and capacity building, in the global south, covering countries like India and Zambia.

During the last quarter, CUTS’ team released its study on the status of Consumer Welfare in E-Commerce, emphasising the need for enhanced E-Consumer welfare in India. We also launched projects to empower Zambian youth through digital mechanisms and build the capacity of women entrepreneurs on cyber security in India.

We also submitted our comments to government bodies, including the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs highlighting the imperative to empower consumers and promote optimum regulation.
In addition, we continued to be actively involved in the UNCTAD eWeek by organising two events and regularly releasing daily bulletins.

Further, we are proactively engaged in issues related to data privacy, consumer grievance redressal, ethical framework for 6G technology, and digital policymaking, among others.

We hope that readers will find our work interesting and useful. We look forward to your generous feedback.

Capacity Building of Women on Cyber Security in Select Districts of West Bengal

With the rapid growth of digital platforms by different age groups, the threats of cyber fraud or cyberattacks have increased multifold. In particular, teenage female users have proven to be more vulnerable to cyber-attacks, as they lack awareness of various cyber threats and have limited resources to put in place appropriate infrastructure to counter such threats.

The overall objective of the initiative was to develop the capacities of adult women and women-led micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in select districts in West Bengal on various cyber threats and equip them with strategies on how to combat cyber threats. Each of these capacity-building workshops was organised at the district level where the level of awareness about cyber security is believed to be considerably low.

In this context, CUTS with support from Meridian International, US organised a series of capacity-building training workshops on cyber-security for adult women and women-led MSMEs in six different districts of West Bengal, including, Harishpur, Basirhat, North-24-Parganas, Gobardhanpur, Kakdwip, South 24 Parganas. Around 60-70 women of different age groups participated.
