EVolution: Aligning the Just Energy Transition Agenda in the Electric Mobility Ecosystem with the G20 Framework

Background

The world is working towards limiting the impact of climate change. One of the mitigation approaches to do this is making the transport sector clean and green, which can rapidly reduce carbon emissions and eventually contribute to the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5oC. lndia is also transitioning towards electric vehicles (EVs) in different segments, but there are challenges such as range anxiety, standardisation, and the skilling of the workforce.

There are infrastructural gaps and administrative challenges which need to be tackled to ensure a smooth transition. With lndia assuming the G2O presidency in 2023, several announcements are being made in the space of green energy transition. This will be a watershed moment for India charting out the future roadmap for inclusive, multi-sectoral growth with a focus on the wellbeing of its citizens in this space. To capture the ongoing and relevant issues and developments in this sector a series of activities is envisaged.

Project Brief

About the Project

The project, titled “Aligning the Just Energy Transition in the Electric Mobility Ecosystem with the G20 Framework,” aims towards making transportation more sustainable, reducing pollution, and promoting a greener future while prioritising citizens wellbeing. The core objectives of this project revolve around promoting engaging discussions and interactions related to the Just Energy Transition (JET) within the context of green mobility, particularly within the G20 framework, ultimately leading to the formulation of a comprehensive action plan.

The project involves closely following G20 discussions, engaging with various stakeholders, and including voices that are often left out in JET conversations, for instance trade unions. The project employs a multi-level approach, starting at the local level and expanding to regional, national, and international levels, to promote inclusivity and provide comprehensive insights into the challenges and opportunities surrounding JET in green mobility ecosystem.

The project will produce four informative podcasts that discuss important aspects of green mobility. These podcasts will provide practical solutions to real-world problems and encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). The topics explored in the podcast series span a wide spectrum, including cross-country collaboration in the green mobility space, gender issues in sustainable transportation, greener EV charging solutions, job creation in sustainable mobility, and scaling up workforce reskilling and upskilling initiatives. To conclude, a stakeholder consultation will bring together stakeholders to look at how green transportation aligns with G20 sustainability goals. Op-eds published in local and English-language newspapers will also help spread the project’s message and reach a wider audience, influencing public opinions and policies.

The main outcomes expected from this project include raising awareness and promoting discussions about how India’s green transportation sector can transition to cleaner energy sources and align with the G20’s goals. The informative podcasts, grounded in real-world issues and practical solutions, aim to provide useful insights and encourage more people to adopt EVs. The project hopes to create a plan that improves policies, meets current needs, and prepares for the future in the field of green transportation. Summing up, this initiative aims to spread awareness, stimulate constructive discussions, and offer actionable strategies to promote electric vehicles and sustainability on a global scale.
