Increase awareness among consumers can lead to spending less for electricity. “Adopting small steps can lead to saving electricity”, told Keya Ghosh, Director, CUTS Calcutta Resource Centre. This organisation has been working on consumer rights and consumer awareness. They often adopt strategies like skits, workshops etc. to sensitise consumers on various issues. Ghosh pointed out that while electricity supply has not increased significantly there has been an increase electricity consumption thereby putting an upward pressure on electricity tariff. Using electrical appliances with star label, developed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, will help reduce consumer’s spending on electricity bills. She further highlighted the need to stop power theft which also adds to the problem of increasing tariff.
